Gilly studied and researched classical late 17th century northern European painting techniques under the tutelage of the late William Calladine (himself taught in the atelier of Jan Eversun in Amsterdam).

This involved creating traditional works of art using her own ground pigments, mediums and varnishes and supports of both canvas and gesso panels.

Although inspired by the great masters such as Willem Kalf (1619-93) who favoured sumptuous colours and complex imagery, she uses a restrained colour palette coupled with austere compositions more akin to the Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbaran (1598-1664).
